Intimacy with God
Remember your first kiss? I should add, first memorable kiss. It was thrilling! The hairs on your neck stood up because you were experiencing something electrifying. Well, I have a secret. Shhhh! Quiet, I’m whispering now. I have to tell you… you’ve not really kissed until you’ve experienced a kiss from God.
Key Insight
You have the capability of nurturing holy intimacy with God.
Kiss and Tell
Many find it odd that Song of Solomon was canonized as holy scripture. At first, second or third read we might ask why was it included? It tells of what one might consider private, intimate encounters between King Solomon and the Shulamite woman, his soon to be bride.
Since all Scripture was inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16), the Song of Solomon moves from a simple expression of love between a man and a woman to an allegory of the love between Christ and His bride, the Church.
The story cloaks a deeper revelation of the relationship between Jesus and His bride, the Church. It reveals how Christ takes pleasure in us and we have the capacity to move God in an emotional way.
You might say Jesus is not mentioned in the Song of Solomon. True, but that does not mean He’s not there waiting to be revealed! God is not mentioned in the book of Esther yet God reveals himself through interventions by saving diaspora Jews from utter destruction at the hand of Haman. Jesus is not mentioned by name in Song of Solomon yet there are distinct parallels between Solomon’s relationship with his bride and Jesus’ relationship with His bride, the Church. This runs true throughout the book of Solomon but in this writing I will address Jesus and His bride in the first four verses of Chapter 1. But first, it must be established that Jesus is the Bridegroom and the Church is the bride.
Jesus our Bridegroom
Jesus is the Lamb that was slain for our sins and He is the Lamb spoken of in Revelation 19:7-9
7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready;
8 to her it has been granted to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”
In Ephesians 5:25-27, Paul uses the example of Christ’s love for the Church by encouraging selflessness between husband and wife. The point is, the Church is inferred as the bride of Christ.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
26 in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word,
27 so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind—yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish.
It has been established that,
- The Song of Solomon is the inspired word of God
- There is revelatory depth beyond what we read on the surface
- Solomon is espoused to the Shulamite woman as Jesus Christ is espoused to the Church
Song of Solomon
Now let’s look at Song of Solomon Chapter 1 verses 1-4.
There are three main characters.
- King Solomon, who is the prophetic shadow of the Bridegroom King, Jesus.
- Shulamite Bride, who is the prophetic shadow of the Church, Jesus’ bride.
- Daughters of Jerusalem, who are the less mature believers.
Again, on the surface we are reading of the intimacy between a natural man and woman but we will uncover insights into nurturing intimacy with God from the same themes.
Song of Solomon 1:1-4
1 The song of songs, which is Solomon’s.
2 Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine,
3 your anointing oils are fragrant, your name is perfume poured out; therefore the maidens love you.
4 Draw me after you, let us make haste. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; Rightly do they love you.
Song of Solomon Verses 1-4 Analyzed
Now let’s examine this passage of scriptures verse by verse.
Verse 2
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.
The Kiss
Kissing from the earliest of times meant a show of affection from a slight peck on the cheek to a deep passionate mouth to mouth kiss. Of course, the degree of affection is in direct correlation with the type of kiss given.
Physiology of Kissing
While you kiss, facial nerves carry impulses from your lips, tongue and face to your brain to signal an appropriate response. Your brain responds by ordering your body to produce:
- Oxytocin, which helps people develop feelings of attachment, devotion and affection for one another
- Dopamine, which plays a role in the brain’s processing of emotions, pleasure and pain
- Serotonin, which affects a person’s mood and feelings
- Adrenaline, which increases heart rate and plays a role in your body’s fight-flight-or freeze response
When you kiss, these hormones and neurotransmitters rush through your body. Along with natural endorphins that produce the euphoria most people feel during a good kiss. In addition, your heart rate increases and your blood vessels dilate, so your whole body receives more oxygen;. you feel exhilarated.
Implications of Kissing
In the Middle Ages, the practice of kissing was governed by one’s rank. People of equal rank, both male and female, would kiss on the lips; people of lesser rank would kiss on the cheek, hand, knee, foot or the ground in front of the person. The greater the rank difference, the further from the lips one would kiss.
A Contract Seal
As many did not know how to read and write, a kiss was also used to seal contracts. People drew an “X” for their name on the document and kissed it to make it legal. That’s the origin of the “X” put on Valentines or letters to symbolize a kiss. That is also the origin of the term “sealed with a kiss”.
Shulamite’s Request for a Kiss
In verse 2, the Shulamite bride is asking for a kiss from her bridegroom. She is requesting that he manifest his reality to her again. The Shulamite conveys that experiencing the king’s love is better than wine which is equivalent to saying his love is better than the finest wine, a coveted item during that time.
She knows she’s already engaged; plans are being made, but she wants a refreshing of his love. Memory fades. The kiss last month was last month. The experience we had with God two years ago was two years ago. As a member of the bride of Christ, I want a refreshing, a reminder of what is to come!
The Impartation – When Jesus Kisses
The kisses of the king’s mouth speak of two things. First and foremost, kissing should never be treated as a casual act. It expresses the idea of love, affection and intimacy. Secondly, kisses from mouth to mouth are typical of transfer or an impartation from the heart of the giver to the heart of the receiver. Likewise, when the Bridegroom, Christ kisses his bride, there is a transfer from Heart to heart. Thoughts, actions and words come from the heart whether man or God.
Matthew 15:18
But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart….
Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
The Word from God’s Heart became flesh…
John 1:14
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 17:26
And I have made Your name [God’s name] known to them [the Church], and will make it known, so that the love [from the heart] with which You [God] loved Me [Jesus] may be in them [the Church], and I [Jesus] in them.
Note: Words in brackets [ ] have been added for clarity.
This is the impartation. The love of God! The Word of God. His Love proceeds out of the mouth of Jesus the Giver, into the mouth or heart of his bride.
When you receive a kiss from Jesus you are receiving His Word-Love but not in any old kind of way, not on the ground, feet, hand or cheek. When that Word-Love is placed on your lips [in your heart], something physiological happens. There is an excitement, an overwhelming joy that cannot be contained. You may want to grab a pen and start writing because a flood of insight is being birth in your mind. When Jesus kisses you in prayer, you may literally melt in tears or become spiritually intoxicated with joy. There is no problem that cannot be handled! Your spirit is so caught up with His that you don’t want to withdraw from His Presence or that moment of bliss!
Christ our King has chosen us so He is absolutely delighted when we seek a kiss as the Shulamite sought Solomon. She sets the locale of the kiss… on her mouth. The most intimate place. This is where she opens herself to vulnerability; this is where she opens herself up to receive whatever he has for her. Likewise, to have an intimate moment with God, you must let your guard down, your preconceptions, your fears and leave yourself open to what God has for you in that moment.
The Shulamite desired prolonged, multiple kisses. When you are caught up in a spiritual kiss from the Lord you want to prolong that time for it is sublime. You lose track of time! A natural example for me is a foot massage. I can be massaged for forty-five minutes and it will feel like only five simply because I love the comfort it brings me. It is the same feeling with Jesus, a kiss from Him dims the world around you and you lose track of time. The heart is overflowing with joy and a strong sense of His love and presence envelopes you. It seems nothing in this natural world can harm you, nothing is more important than sharing that moment with Christ. And nothing is! It is heavenly ecstasy!
Entering His Chamber
It’s in those times of enjoying His Presence songs such as these fill my heart and mind and find their way to my lips…
In His Presence, there’s fullness of joy
At His right Hand pleasures forevermore
O what fellowship divine
I am His and He is mine
In the presence of the Lord
There’s fullness of joy
And also,
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by
Oh what a love between my Lord and I
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and, over and over again
When I first fell in love with Jesus,
I gave Him all my heart
And I thought I couldn’t love him more
than I did right at the start.
But now I look back over the mountains,
and the valleys where I’ve been
And It makes me know I love Him so much
more than I did then
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and over and over again
He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by
Oh what a love between my Lord and I
I keep falling in love with Him
Over and over and, over and over again
It is a moment that is also coveted by the Lord as well, as evidenced in Exodus 20:5.
5 You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.
When is God jealous?
When your kisses are directed to the wrong person or entity.
Kiss of Death
Kisses are dangerous or deadly when shared between the wrong people. There are physical and emotional dangers that can come from kissing the wrong person. Remember, a kiss is an impartation. Eve ‘kissed’ the serpent. She took in his deceptive words over the words of the Creator. Judas kissed Jesus in the Garden but it was with insincerity. He had already ‘kissed’ the Pharisees by accepting their murderous impartation.
Who are you kissing? Who or What is imparting their heart into yours?
We have been called into a bridal relationship with Jesus. The purpose of the divinely inspired Song of Solomon is to help uncover how Jesus feels about us and journey into a holy romance with Him. It is crucial to understand that Jesus has feelings! He is not just aware of us, but wants to be involved with us day-to-day at a heart level.
Cleansing before Entering His Chamber
Verse 3
How pleasing is your fragrance; your name is like the spreading fragrance of scented oils. No wonder all the young women love you!
Just as a plant’s fragrance/essence is an expression of what is inside the plant, so Jesus’ oil, the Holy Spirit, speaks of the essence inside us, his bride.
Remember Esther in the Bible? Her ladies-in-waiting applied oils and fragrances on Esther for a year before she was brought to the king. That was their process of cleansing and bringing out the beauty in the bride. Jesus left us His essence, His oil, His attendant, His Holy Spirit to get us ready for His Coming. As the Holy Spirit resides in us, we bathe daily as He prepares us with the oil of joy and the Word of God which cleanses us if we apply it (Ephesians 5:25-27). It’s a choice.
Experiencing the Intimacy
Verse 4
Take me with you; come, let’s run! The king has brought me into his chamber.
The Shulamite expresses her life purpose in verse 4 after realizing that the king’s love is better than the best things in life. First, she asks to be taken away. This speaks of the bride’s desire to leave behind every inferior thing and that every hindrance to their relationship be removed. She wants to steal away with him. Secondly, she asks to run together with the king. This is her desire to share in the king’s life and work.
If living for Christ is boring or just religious activities, I must ask, have you had an encounter with Jesus? An encounter or a “chamber experience” produces a longing for Jesus, because it becomes clear that His love is superior to all other potential life pursuits.
Zacchaeus had a chamber experience as told in Luke 19:1-9. In the presence of Christ Zacchaeus had an immediate change of attitude. He became willing to give up everything contrary to Christ to spend time with Him. The Samaritan woman had a chamber experience as told in St. John 4:5-29. Jesus, the stranger, revealed her innermost secrets and yet did not condemn her but offered her redemption. She left the well exclaiming to others to ‘come see a man, a man like no other!’ What makes these chamber experiences? Does this intimacy happen today? Absolutely!
The chamber is where we know Jesus sees through our facade. We are de-robed of our personas, positions, titles and we become naked before the Lord with nothing to cover us. This state of being is quite humbling and could be shaming if it was with anyone but Jesus. Jesus, in spite of our filthy righteousness (Isaiah 64:6) gathers us not in condemnation but pours the floodgates of His love on us instead. O the delight of being accepted and the knowledge that you are loved stimulates such reciprocal feelings from the receiver to the Giver! If you haven’t already, you can enjoy a chamber experience! The experience is built on relationship. Jesus is not walking the earth in flesh and blood as he was in the biblical examples given but one must seek to establish a relationship with the One He did leave on earth for us, the Holy Spirit. Sadly, there are those Christians who leave Christ in the songs sung and the Holy Spirit sitting on the pew at church thereby limiting the opportunity to nurture an intimate relationship with Him.
Fully Known and Loved
Verse 4 continued
We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine;
Rightly do they love you.
In the Song of Solomon, Jesus wants us to begin to understand the depth and extent of His Love as disclosed in Ephesians 3:18-19.
18 be fully capable of comprehending with all the saints (God’s people) the width and length and height and depth of His love [fully experiencing that amazing, endless love];
19 and [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].
The Daughters of Jerusalem admired the king as indicated by “rightly do they [daughters of Jerusalem] love you”, but only the bride could have him. Are you a bride? Then you have the right to know Him completely and fully. It is His desire that you know Him personally, not simply through rote ceremonies, sacraments, programs and traditions. But that YOU may know HIM!
I challenge you to begin to romance Jesus, to seek that fullness, to open your SELF up to experience the fulfillment of His presence, to pursue a kiss, to enter his chamber to nurture intimacy with God.
Now I leave this song with you as a prayer for your journey with Him. When I first heard this song I was offended by referring to the Holy Spirit as a “Heavenly Lover.” I thought it was so carnal. I now know, it was me that was carnal not the reality of being loved by God in an intimate way. Thank God, many years have passed and I know and love what it means and sing it with no hesitation. I hope you can too.

Into thy chamber, be free Holy Spirit,

I’ll read and learn your words, as they are my fire.

Back to the moment, where it first began.

Love between two human beings isn’t necessarily logical but that doesn’t mean there is no love. All the more, love between God, a Spirit and mortal man is even less logical. Anywhere there is love, there is intimacy. I saw a story recently where a bear, a lion and a leopard (could be wrong about the leopard, but there was a third predator) were raised together and each would not leave each other’s side. They had to stay in the same enclosure. Their “love” had transcended nature. Likewise until you let down your guard and desire to know Jesus like that, that is opening your mind and becoming vulnerable to something you are unfamiliar with, it will all seem foolish and illogical to you…until you experience it.
