He Knows My Name
The first Man was named Adam and the first Woman was named Eve. Every humankind after that was given a name.
Adam
The Hebrew word for “man”. Derived from Hebrew אדם (adam) meaning “to be red”, referring to the ruddy color of human skin, or from Akkadian adamu meaning “to make”.
Eve
From the Hebrew name חַוָּה (Chawwah), meaning “to breathe” or the related word חָיָה (chayah) meaning “to live”.
What’s in a Name?
Your surname known as your family or last name is historical. As villages grew it became necessary to distinguish one Tom from another Tom in the village. Surnames assigned were either patronymic such as Tom Richards depicting Tom, the son of Richard; locative such as Rivers and Hill; occupational such as Smith and Fisher; status such as Knight and Lord or descriptive such as Short and Jolly.
Our first and middle names known as given names were an assignment of family distinction. It could be one of aspiration such as Hope or Victor; an object such as Iris or Peter which means “rock”; a place such as Jordan or Israel; or an invented name contemporary to its time such as Jaelyn or Amani.

What is Man?
Psalm 8:3-5
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them[c] with glory and honor.
Names are badges. As we wear them from youth to maturity they evolve either to accumulate honor, evoke disdain or a combination of both. At their mention, some names bring a smile to your face, others not so much simply because they represent the personalities that wear them. There are names the world recognizes while other names are reduced to mere numbers such as in the prison system. There are names to which we can attribute great feats even if only in our little world. And there are names recalled only when speaking of atrocities and defeat.
Maybe you are not certain what weight or glory your name bears at this juncture of your life but if you’ve lived long enough you’ve experienced both weight and glory. Regardless of your current state, whether your name depicts an aspiration, an object or a habit, or if anyone outside your circle knows you, there is One that knows your name. Not only that, He even knows the number of hairs on your head! Seriously, who cares enough to keep count of the number of hairs on your head? JESUS does!
Living in the Dash
Someone told me that we live in the dash. When you look at a headstone in a cemetery it reads,
John Doe
Born XX/XX/XXXX – Died XX/XX/XXXX
The person lying beneath the headstone had nothing to do with their birth, nor did he or she have any power to stop death. All their living, all of what is associated with the name on the headstone was done within the confines of the dash. One day it will justify or condemn us before God.
Today, we are living in the dash. We may have some good characteristics or we may have some not-so-good characteristics. We are a product our genetics, environment, teachings and ultimately our choices. Sometimes we choose right, sometimes we choose wrong. We seek validation but it may not come. There’s one thing we can be certain of is regardless of how needy we may become under the struggles of this world, we know that God knows our name and He knows where we are. The following lyrics sung by the Mcraes best depicts who we are behind the name.
He Knows My Name
He counts the stars one and all
He knows how much sand is on the shores
He sees every sparrow that falls
He made the mountains and the seas
He’s in control of everything
Of all creatures great and small
And He knows my name
Every step that I take
Every move that I make
Every tear that I cry
He knows my name
When I’m overwhelmed by the pain
And can’t see the light of day
I know I’ll be just fine
‘Cause He knows my name
I don’t know what tomorrow may bring
I can’t tell you what’s in store
I don’t know a lot of things
I don’t have all the answers
To the questions of my life
But I know in Whom I have believed
He knew who I was when He carried my cross
He knew that I would fail Him but He took the loss
And he knows my name
Every step that I take
Every move that I make
Every tear that I cry
He knows my name
When I’m overwhelmed by the pain
And can’t see the light of day
I know I’ll be just fine
‘Cause he knows my name
He knew that old deceiver Jacob. He knew that terrorist Saul. He knew that doubting Thomas. He knew that adulterous David. He knew them all by their names. Even in the primordial soup of their lives while the components of their destiny were yet forming God saw fit to ascribe new names in their futures. In God’s eyes Jacob was always Israel the father of the nation of Israel, even in the midst of his deceitfulness. Saul was always Paul the ambassador of the gospel to the Gentiles, even while he sought to eradicate first century Christians.
Your name as it stands right now may have some good attributes associated with it or it may not. Whether good or bad God knows your real name. He hears you when you call, when you weep, when you groan, when you sorrow, He knows your name when you feel alone, when you’re destitute, when you’re not sure of what to do, be encouraged, not only has He crowned you with glory and honor, He has given you a new name.
A New Name
Revelation 2:17
“Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.
The priest wore an ephod that cradled twelve precious stones. Each stone carried the name of one of the 12 tribes of Israel (Exodus 28:21). Every time the priest entered the Temple he carried the tribe into the presence of God. In the same manner, the “white stone” with the believer’s new name written on it is representative of The Redeemed being in God’s presence. It will not be symbolical of His presence as with the priest walking in the Temple but you, The Redeemed will actually be in the presence of God for He is the One giving you your stone!
The White Stone
During the time the book of Revelation was written, a white stone was equivalent with innocence. If an individual was tried for a crime, a white stone signified acquittal, and a black stone signified guilt. To receive a white stone meant the person is free from condemnation.
Additionally, the Bible was written during the time of the ancient Roman custom of awarding white stones to the victors of athletic games. The winner of a contest was awarded a white stone with his name inscribed on it. This served as his “ticket” to a special awards banquet. Likewise, whoever perseveres in this Christian race and overcomes will receive a “pass” into the victory banquet in heaven!
The new name on the stone will reflect the battles that you’ve fought and won, the sufferings that you’ve endured. It will illustrate who you’ve become because of your faithfulness and God’s grace. (2 Peter 1:4) Only You and God know the battles you had to endure, and you will immediately identify with that new name. The wisdom behind imposed struggles will become clear to you and you can bask in the glory of being an overcomer.
Yes, He knows your name and if you stay under the shadow of His wings (Psalm 17:8), you’ll be given your white stone with your new name.
Good News – Everything’s New
Not only will you have a new name, but you’ll have a new body for the glory of the old has faded away and you’ll take on the glory of a new celestial body that doesn’t fade away with age, disease or worry (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). And that’s not all, there will be a new heaven and a new earth, a new Jerusalem (Revelation 21:1,2) for this present earth and this present heaven will pass away. Isaiah pens that you will have no memory of the former, it will not come to mind (Isaiah 65:17,18).
INVITATION
You are Invited to Enjoy
A New Earth, A New Heaven, A New Jerusalem, A New Body,
A NEW NAME!
Consider this a “Save the Date”. The banquet is ready, your place setting is there with your new name on it! Now run with patience this race that is set before you. When no one else knows who you are or where you are, HE does, HE knows you. He is standing at the entrance of the banqueting hall with your engraved white stone in His hand.
He is waiting for you…
