You may recall the story of Job in the Bible. Job was a good man, had friends and was well thought of in his circles. He was so spiritually conscientious that he made amends for his children’s just-in-case sins. His wealth in houses, land and livestock displayed not only his business acumen but his stewardship in maintaining what he had acquired. Life was good. He had everything covered, until…
Calm Before the Storm
Have you ever reached a point in your life where everything is in place? You have “all your ducks in a row.” Life, generally speaking, is sweet. There’s nothing much you have need of. Then it happens. You are completely blindsided. You never saw it coming. Everything that was in order got hit, BAM! Before you could surmise what happened, then POW! Struggling to get your brain around the situation to respond then KAPOW! Something throws you to your knees! Now you’re flat on your back, dizzied by the blows wandering what’s going on. You say out loud. “Whaaaaat just happened?” Stuff is making violent contact in your life like a boxer landing blows on an opponent in a boxing match.
Sneak Attack
Most of you have lived long enough to know when something is coming at you. If it is coming from a person you know by the person’s attitude and how they poster themselves toward you. That is notice enough to get in a “I’m ready for you” mode. You can anticipate the action and plan a calculated response to the threat. It’s when you are caught off-guard with one calamity after another, there is no prepared counter-action and certainly no plan. It’s pure panic mode.
How do you collect yourself and stand flat-footed against the onslaught?
The first thing you must do is to take an assessment. Ask yourself, what is inside your bubble, things you can you control and what is outside your bubble, things you can’t control.
Inside your Bubble
Once you’ve done your initial assessment and you’ve determined what you can control….then clean house. Surveying the damage and the potential for more, you may be required to make some hard decisions for the peace of the whole. One of the obstacles in making hard decisions is someone won’t like it or agree with it. It’s good to take others’ arguments into account but at the end of the day make decisions that are best for you. If you are made whole by the decision, then you can help others. If you are not whole, you have need of a physician yourself and can be of no effective help to anyone.
Outside your Bubble
There are things that impact your life that you have no control over. If so, then there is only one thing to do. Go to the Source that does have control over those things. One thing to consider is that you don’t know how God masterminds his plan for your life.
Isaiah 45:7 says,
7 I [God] form the light and make the dark. I send good times and bad. I, Jehovah, am he who does these things.
The Question
Why would God allow “bad” things to come our way?
Consider God’s dealings with Cyrus, king of ancient Persia, a man that did not know Him as God.
Isaiah 45: 1-6
1This is Jehovah’s message to Cyrus, God’s anointed, whom he has chosen to conquer many lands. God shall empower his right hand, and he shall crush the strength of mighty kings. God shall open the gates of Babylon to him; the gates shall not be shut against him anymore.
2 I will go before you, Cyrus, and level the mountains and smash down the city gates of brass and iron bars.
3 And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness, secret riches; and you will know that I am doing this—I, the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by your name.
4 And why have I named you for this work? For the sake of Jacob, my servant—Israel, my chosen. I called you by name when you didn’t know me.
5 I am Jehovah; there is no other God. I will strengthen you and send you out to victory even though you don’t know me,
6 and all the world from east to west will know there is no other God. I am Jehovah and there is no one else. I alone am God.
The Answer
The question again is,
“Why would God allow “bad” things to come our way?”
One can extract the answer through God’s plan for Cyrus.
- For a Witness: God has offered up your name as one that can go through the “bad” things and bring glory to His name by revealing God to the “world” through your trials. Didn’t He do the same with Job (Job 1:6-12)?
- Present Glory: He has anointed (selected) you for the battle and strengthens you during the battle. He will open doors that have been closed to you. Spiritual treasures that were hidden from you, will be revealed as you seek God’s direction in prayer.
- Future Glory: You will partake in the glory that has been reserved for Christ as denoted in,
1 Peter 4:12-13
12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which is taking place to test you [that is, to test the quality of your faith], as though something strange or unusual were happening to you.
13But insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, keep on rejoicing, so that when His glory [filled with His radiance and splendor] is revealed, you may rejoice with great joy.
You Got This
EVERYTHING happens for a reason. There is nothing that occurs that goes unchecked by God. He knows about it. So, RELAX. King Cyrus, a man that did not know God still had purpose in executing God’s plan for His people.
Are you God’s people? If so, then relax. Warm your tea, get a biscuit and ‘chill’ knowing you are in the palm of His Hand and neither man, spirit or beast can change that (John 10:27-29). You are covered!
