Walking on Water
Where have you been?
Oh, I’ve been walking.
Walking where?
Walking on water.
Consider the story of Peter in a boat that was rocked by fierce winds and waves in Matthew 14:22-33. He dared to step out of what little safety the boat offered to connect with the one person [Jesus] that could lift him above his circumstances. To get to Him, Peter walked on water.
2020, who will forget it? It has come with its fury in global proportions. Flexing its muscles, it has also slipped past the security of our homes to bring personal devastation. It is time to walk on water.
Water of Personal Devastation
The Fall
My first step into the deep was my husband’s fall off the front porch which catastrophically damaged his spinal cord. Even in this devastation, Jesus extended his hand to Richard, lifted him up and saved his life. He now lives paralyzed from chest down. We walk on water.
The Crash
Then there was the tow truck that stopped in a traveling lane on I-85. The car directly behind the truck was able to react quickly and pull into another lane. My 20-year-old grandson who was driving behind that car had no time to react. Jesus lifted this grandmother’s heart up and the life of my firstborn grandson. He is recovering from two surgeries that left a steel rod in his left leg and patched up ligaments in his right knee. I walk on water.
The Call
A phone call from Connecticut froze my breath in my chest. The call was from my son’s best friend who told me my son’s roommate attacked him with a butcher knife. Jesus lifted this mother’s heart up again and my son escaped with a slash to the face and a dislocated shoulder. I walk on water.
The Wind
Hurricane Isaias sweeps by with rain and some wind only making a wet impression where I live. Speaking to friends and relatives in Connecticut, they were without water and electricity, some staying in hotels, some bunking up together but never complaining or losing faith. They walk on water.
The Earthquake
Just this past Sunday my house rocked. Not by a party I was throwing but by a 5.1 magnitude earthquake. I sat in my bed feeling and hearing the house shake, knowing I was helpless against what might come next. I walk on water.
The Faith
Through all of this I know nothing takes God by surprise. I still believe the steps of the righteous are ordered of the Lord. Paul reminds us that the suffering of this present world cannot be compared to glory that will be revealed in us (Romans 8: 17-18). So, my prayer is that if I must suffer, that I suffer right. Not with complaint, or shaking my fist at God but as one that would manifest the glory of God through my faith by walking on water.
Water of the Unchanged Heart
There were many times I had begun to write my stance on the pandemic, on George Floyd, on the protests and the various reactions to these protests. I could never finish because I realize now I was only exposing my anger and not offering fodder for resolution. Venting may provide some release, but it leaves the receivers in shambles if no space is made for mutual understanding and reparations.
Like everyone, I was entrenched in the news, social media which carry their own sphere of influence. Yet I found buoyancy by conversing with a diverse community of people each of us speaking our truths separating fact from fiction.
Thankfully, I’ve waited long enough to see many groups coming together, large and small, to talk, to see through the other person’s eyes. That’s where the real change will happen. At the grassroots, where people live. You can legislate anything but unless the legislators and the people believe it is justified it is just icing on a cake. Just the icing, no cake. Looks pretty, but no one that can propagate change will really support it. Protests will not bring a lasting change, there must be a change in the hearts of those who knowingly or unknowingly perpetuate suppression. I’ve joined others who are walking on this water.
Water of Coronavirus
The Pestilence
It came from the East like a swarm of locusts covering the globe feeding on lives indiscriminately. Everyone runs for cover. Of course, there are those that mandate our response to this virus who also dance in an open field during a lightning storm giving the wretched malady recurring strength to pummel us again and again. In this, it takes good sense and God’s grace to survive. It may even require God’s grace to the stricken to accept the inevitable.
My initial scare with COVID-19 was in April but thank God I tested negative. The second scare was in early July. My temperature had risen to 104.3, had achy muscles, weakness and was just plain sick. I was afraid that even with all my precautions I still contracted the disease. Everyone in the house that was fit and able left as to not expose themselves and rightfully so. Short story shorter, my primary care physician instructed me to go to ER. After testing I discovered I had pneumonia not COVID-19. Now the pneumonia is nothing to shake a stick at but I was sure glad I did not have COVID-19. I walk on water.
Walking on Water
What is walking on water?
It’s taking the high road when justification gives you restitutional rights to the low road. It’s learning to discount the threats, to look into the heart of an opposer and see their lack. It is discovering and acknowledging your own deficit and taking steps to course correct. It’s acknowledging we’re all the same and being the first to say I need to change my perspective. It’s taking life as it comes at you and wrestling until there is no more strength then wrestling some more. It’s knowing that behind all the wind, all the rain, all the waves that there is a place in Jesus where you can sink in the depths of His peace and walk on water.

Little Faith
Yes I know, Peter did start off walking on water, but he sank after allowing himself to be distracted by the wind and waves. Jesus promptly dubbed him as having ‘little faith’. Peter knew the consistency of water and knew through natural means it would not hold him up, yet he stepped out on it. Would you have?
So what was ‘little’ about his faith? I must admit I was enlightened by Pastor Steve Furtick on Peter’s ‘little’ faith. To me it took great faith (or a great fool) to step out of a boat to walk on to water. How many of you have started out with a great idea/project with great enthusiasm and eventually the enthusiasm and idea fades away pushed aside by distractions or other priorities? Your enthusiasm did not sustain your vision therefore your vision faded. Peter’s faith was not a sustained faith therefore his “walk” faltered.
Great Faith
So then what is great faith, sustained faith? We look at the Centurion in Luke 7 :2-9 who required Jesus to only ‘say the word’ to heal his servant. His faith was sustained because he required no more than Jesus’ word. No personal appearance, no fleecing, no additional confirmations were required.
When Jesus walking on the sea spoke and identified himself to the disciples as Jesus, he was identifying the one who had just fed five thousand plus with two fishes and five loaves of bread. At this proclamation or rather in spite of this proclamation, Peter said ‘if’ you are Jesus then bid me come’. Seriously Peter, what other man do you know would come walking on the sea other than Jesus who has already identified himself as Jesus? You need no further proof, verification, other than the word God [Jesus] has given you.
If you can put it in gear and go with no more to go on than His Word, then you have achieved sustained faith, great faith. How? Because you trust and believe in His Word and that’s enough for you. It is backed up, certified, vetted, and sealed by the blood of the Eternal and Sovereign God.
So, take Jesus at His Word when he speaks and despite the fall, the wind, the crash, the call, the opposition, the pestilence, the earthquake …
WALK ON WATER.
