I was up early, as most mornings I am, but this morning I really got up. I’d thought I’d start my day off right by meditating and talking with God. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist so I scanned over my life and what I thought might be worthy contributions to God and humankind. As usual, I fell short, real short. As I agonized over what could have been, should have been and would have been I was deeply compelled to pick up pen and write the words flooding my head…

God makes us vessels of various sorts to do various things, to function in various ways. One vessel is different from another. Shaped differently, formed differently, responds differently…that was intentional. Take for instance a gold, diamond studded chalice designed to cradle the best wines one of royal status could afford. The chalice rests in a place of high esteem, placed where all can see and admire.

Then there’s the bucket. A hard plastic, wire handled bucket with a molded spout. There is no particular attraction, no charisma, just function. The bucket catches the rain when the roof springs a leak. It will hold soapy water to dip a dirty mop that has swabbed the dirt and grime from the floor. The bucket willingly holds captive the dirt and grime leaving a clean, shiny floor.

Both the chalice and the bucket are vessels. But what if the bucket wanted to trade places with the chalice? Imagine a beautiful, glass-backed cabinet with glass shelves holding the sparkling chalices and sitting right in the midst of them is a bucket! A cleaned up bucket, yes, fresh and smelling of Pine Sol. Should the bucket be offended if no one chooses to drink from it? The chalice which traded places with the bucket sits on the floor filled with soapy water ready and willing to exchange the clean water for soiled to produce the same shiny floor. The intentions and well meaning are there but shall the floor now be mopped with a toothbrush?
No, no, no! This is so wrong. There is an honor that only belongs to the chalice, in its rightful place. There is an honor that only belongs to the bucket, in its rightful place. Whether a chalice or a bucket, know of which you were formed and own that honor.
So I own my own honor. I may admire the beauty and grace of the chalice but a chalice I may not be. I may have respect for the outcome of which the bucket played a major role but I cannot partake in the glory of the bucket. So then my plight is to know for what purpose I exist and be that, only that. I work to reveal the light of glory He has deposited in me. A light, only I can illuminate. I am authentic, tested by time, positioned for service, a vessel fearfully and wonderfully made. If I can be that, then I will live well.
