21 Days – A Spiritual Journey Come. Go with…
A number of Christians will partake in an annual 21 Day Fast to posture themselves for the coming year. Posturing themselves to be spiritually in tune with God to receive His guidance throughout the year in all things. This practice is drawn from Daniel’s fast in Daniel chapter 10.
Daniel 10 New Living Translation
2 When this vision came to me, I, Daniel, had been in mourning for three whole weeks.
3 All that time I had eaten no rich food. No meat or wine crossed my lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks had passed.
12 Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer.
Why Fast?
We see from Daniel, fasting is engaged when you want to seek direction from God. Fasting is driven by a deep desire that your mind, your ways, your deeds must be one with God. Petitions (requests) are brought before God. Prayer and fasting are coupled in the spirit of surrender by confessing our need for Him in order to make right choices in life. We lay ourselves bare before God holding nothing back for no secret, no sin is hidden from Him. We hold our carnal man hostage, bridling him to the reins of our spirit man who wants more God than natural food or entertainment. The fleshly appetite is brought under subjection by the strengthening of our spirit man. Simply put, fasting is not a diet, it is a struggle for authority and power between your carnal nature and your spiritual nature.
Abstinence
Abstinence means to abstain from, to avoid. Some people may not choose to go on a strict Daniel’s Fast which basically entails no meat, sweets or dairy products. Vegetables in their natural state absent of artificial preservatives is the primary staple. There are various interpretations of what to consume and what not to consume. The point is not to become overly legalistic. It’s about giving up the artificial for the pure to heal the body and forsaking self-indulgences for intimacy with God to mature the spirit. If this is new to you, don’t be over zealous. Take smaller steps by choosing a couple foods you will not consume during this time. As long as it is truly a personal sacrifice. Next time you can increase what you give up.
If you are married, it means also to abstain from sexual relations with the consent of your spouse, 1 Corinthians 7:4-5.
Abstinence is about clearing and cleansing your body and your mind. When God met Israel at the base of Mt. Sinai in Exodus chapter 19, they were instructed to cleanse (sanctify) themselves before approaching the mountain, that place where God would reveal Himself. Abstaining from entertainment, internet play, over-indulgence in social media, etc., that interfere with prayer or effects your mind in a sensual, counter-spiritual manner should be shelved to facilitate the connection between you and God.
Prayer
The most important thing to know about prayer is that it is an exchange between you and God during the 21 Day Fast and hopefully thereafter. The communication goes both ways, from your spirit to His Spirit and likewise from His Spirit to your spirit. Reading the Bible plays an important role in hearing from God as well as listening for God to speak through others as well as to your spirit.
Build your Altar
Be deliberate about your time with God. Set a time of seclusion that everyone will be aware of and respect. Dedicate a place, a space, a time to commune with God in prayer, Bible reading and worship. Vocalizing your petitions and worship to God is so important. SAY it, don’t think your prayer, worship or praise. Be in audible conversation with God. And then listen. Don’t feel compelled to say words that resign themselves to being the worn-out, repetitious phrases you often hear in venues of worship. God is your friend, speak to Him as a friend. Finally, it’s okay to set the atmosphere by playing soft worship songs that help you block out extracurricular distractions in your mind and surroundings and usher you into the holy Presence of God.
First Week Focus: Self
Focus on scriptures that build character, that encourage. Marathon reading is not the goal. Find a passage or even a single scripture that is encouraging. Dwell on it, explore other scriptures that support that scripture. Find out who God is saying you are in that scripture. Stay on that passage until you know who you are in Him!
Every morning, make time to tell Him “Thank You for…” Tell Him your shortcomings and ask for His help. Tell Him how you feel about Him.
Spend some time in the evening to review your day. Are you sensing His Presence with you even more than before? Did you think about Him and it made you smile? Do you feel His protection throughout your day? Can you feel Him pulling you closer?
Usually people begin their fast two to three days after New Year’s Day. This first week is all about sanctifying self, finding out how God sees you and how you need to view yourself. It is about forgiving the unforgivable, putting away those habits and ways that do not edify Christ. It’s about falling in love with Christ and understanding who you are in Him.

This is enough to get you started. Feel free to pose any questions you have or make comments to share your fasting experiences. If you’re new to this it is important to have a fasting partner so you can encourage one another.
Stay tuned. I will follow-up with the focus in Week 2 and 3 in later posts. Also, I must add, if your church does this and you’re already engaged, Hallelujah! This is primarily for those who have not had the joy of coming out of a 21-day fast!

Very interesting and thought provoking blog I enjoyed the video on the man with no limbs because his thoughts and words gave me pause, and to think that I shared many of his inner feelings when, it came to my life as well. I totally understood. life can be seriously unbearable and you want to throw your hands up in the air and say forget it, but God had ( and still has ) other plans for me. I get the same feedback about IE. My only suggestion to them is to please continue to select a compatible browser.
